When Aetna U.S. Medical care corporate management noticed that they wanted to make a considerable number of cuts this year, they did not select to let staff go. Instead, they selected to shutter a Delaware office and move the office's staff into tele-commuting positions. While this could be an atypical move for any company, moving employees into tele-commuting positions isn't -- and is predicted to become increasingly common with today's relentless target the bottom line.
Making the Transition
If you're comfortable with working onsite, the switch to telecommuting could be a bit of a shock. "How you see this job and get ready for it'll decide if it is working for both you and your employer," says career advisor and executive coach Clay Parsons of Alternative Futures. "telecommuting is a job, not a holiday from responsibility." as an element of the transition, Parsons counsels making a "real office" at home, particularly if delicate financial documents are part of what you will be using and storing there. "don't use [your office] for something else," he is saying. "When you go to work in your house office, go to work. Don't hang out there if you're not working."
Take Yourself -- and Your Job -- Seriously
You will need to make a work structure for yourself together with a schedule that you follow. Organize your projects as if you were in the key office, and ensure you are prepared for whatever might pop up. Schedule weekly conferencing calls with your direct supervisor, endorses Marcia Rhodes, speaker for WorldatWork, a world organisation for HR directors.
Make it " Continuing " for the customer
North Carolina-based Market Street consultants ' President and Chairperson Mark Hall supports his fiscal consultants ' need to telecommute -- although not at the price of clients ' comfort. "it has to be smooth from the start," he asserts. To make that occur, the details must be right. These include installing a second line in your house and ensuring the Caller ID reads the company name or the precise advisor's name. If telephone lines are connected properly, there isn't any reason to have any person even mention that you're not at the office. Instead, the call can just be put thru, which, in turn, reassures the customer. "The tiny things can triumph over any objection a customer can have," claims Hall. "you need to make them feel relaxed and at ease."
Recognize Your Successes
At work, when something goes very well, everybody goes out to lunch or out for a drink after work. It's excellent for morale and it helps incentivize folks for the down times that often come later on. Reward yourself when you merit it. If you land a new account or beat your numbers, throw a party ( at a location aside from your office ), take a pal out for a drink to celebrate or give yourself something special -- just as you would if you were at the office.
Keep Your Options Open
In plenty of ways remote working makes it simpler to keep in contact with mates and associates at other firms and to maintain a structure of finance execs. "in a period of economic doubt, this is essential," says Parsons.
